Introduction to Cloud Computing and Microsoft Azure

Cloud Computing isn’t just a fad. It’s here to stay. You can’t talk about the IT sector without it coming up. Success is defined in the sector by adaptability and so you need to be at least aware of cloud computing at a fundamental level.

There are several cloud offerings in the market these days:

  • Microsoft Azure
  • Amazon AWS
  • Google Compute is the largest ones amongst many others

In this training series, we’ll learn about Microsoft’s cloud offering- Microsoft Azure.

In the past, there was a need for a physical space with all your servers such as your web servers, domain controllers, file servers etc. These on-premise systems or networks had certain limitations such as having to provide internet, cooling, electricity etc. and simple things such as power failures needed backups and planning.

This was precisely why data centres were created which were dedicated locations for housing your infrastructure. They were connected to high bandwidth internet providers, had high physical security, disaster recovery management systems and many other such convenient services. They could also manage your servers for you which grew to be a very lucrative business.

However, when servers weren’t handling enough load, they just sat idle and wasted resources. Virtualization changed that. It enabled multiple servers to run on a single physical server and provided a way to share resources. Data centres started buying large servers and increasing their clientele since resources could be shared.  This meant you could decide and pay for exactly how you wanted your server to be, according to your needs. Everything happened through software (Virtual Machines).

Cloud Computing is an evolution of this technology that already existed. It has a few main characteristics:

  • You can go to an online portal and set up everything yourself
  • Resources are pooled across multiple customers
  • Elasticity of resources- You can increase or decrease the resources as required
  • Reliability of the servers
  • And a model of utility services, so paying based on consumption.

The main differentiating factor is the flexibility in resources you chose and the utility model.

Categories of cloud services-

SaaS– Software as a Service. Software deployed over the internet. Eg- Gmail.

PaaS– Platform as a Service. This is for rapid software development so there is no need to buy and maintain servers for developing software and you don’t have to worry about the underlying infrastructure.

IaaS– Infrastructure as a Service. This is what we’ll learn about in this series. IaaS comes with virtual servers, virtual storage, operating systems and so it’s basically your infrastructure but you get whatever you want as service.

Microsoft Azure is a platform providing IaaS that operates in 17 regions around the world.

There are lots of opportunities in cloud and most large companies are investing a lot into the concept which means it’ll definitely be around for a while and so it’s worth it to follow this series and keep yourself updated about the same.
